The Key Action 1 of the Erasmus+ Program supports Traineeships abroad for students enrolled in vocational education and training (VET); the traineeship may take the form of a work placement or of a study period in a foreign VET institution, with periods of work-based learning as part of the studies.
In this mobility framework, at the beginning of September 2019 we had the pleasure to host in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria a group of 4 vocational students from the Centre of Professional Education “Smiltenes Tehnikums“, in Latvia, for a 4-weeks traineeship in the hospitality sector.

On arrival, the students participated in a short Welcome Meeting at the presence of the incoming Tutor of INTERMOBEX and the school project coordinator who accompanied them; object of the meeting was the presentation of the mobility program. After that, the group moved to visit the host companies for the First Cognitive Meeting, where they could meet their supervisors, review training plans and working schedule and clarify any doubt.
Our Latvian students were been training in the hospitality sector, specifically in Catering and Hotel Service. Their work placement were:
- Hotel Aloe Canteras, hosting Artūrs and Kristīne training as Waiters;
- Restaurant Sunset Beach Bar, hosting Toms training as Cook Assistant;
- Restaurant El Rincón Aragonés, hosting Dāvis training as Cook Assistant.
Undoubtedly, our incoming students were lucky to have a traineeship in the hospitality sector in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, being tourism the main economic activity of the Canary Islands and hospitality the most active business segment in the archipelago. Working in tourism in a region like the Canaries is a plus advantage for hospitality students who decide to have an experience abroad. In this way, they won’t simply have a practical training but a unique opportunity to gain specific job expertise in one of the main touristic destination in Europe. What better, then?
Likewise, we are always lucky to be part of the mobility training experience in Gran Canaria of our foreign participants and to see how much they enjoy the traineeship and the stay in Spain.
